There have been a major controversy faced by human beings from the very beginning of the modern agriculture evaluation; Increasing agriculture productivity and food security with greater efficiencies, in the meantime, less harm to environment. Appropriate response to these challenges has pushed the policy makers to wards effective, on time and optimum use of inputs. Besides economic advantages, this strategy prevents harmful agricultural chemicals entering the food chain and so in human body. Also, Soil and water as the two vital sources in agriculture are suffering from misuse of technology, add to this the shortage of water and impacts of climate change that all are jeopardizing the suffering of coming generations. The “Precision Agriculture” might be a good solution! In PA, optimum values of inputs are applied based on the previous data. The decisions can be made regarding the changes across a field at a certain time in the season, or to changes through a season or seasons. PA is not a new approach; in the past, when the fields were small and the number of animals in the dairy farms was low, farmer could survey whole farm or monitor animals one by one. With increasing farm sizes and the number of animals, this became a laborious job, and sometimes impossible for farmers. Development of electronic, sensors, positioning systems and information technology made data collection, their processing and variable rate application possible. PA in Iran is new issue and addressing it isn’t only a choice but a necessity. So, Precision Agriculture Research Group at University of Tabriz (UTPARG) was established to:

  • Develop PA in Iran and in the region,
  • Help to improve PA knowledge of agricultural engineers,
  • Connect with the International societies and organizations, in the field of PA.
