Department of  Plant Biotechnology and Breeding is focused on teaching and research in the area of crop production and breeding. We offer degrees such as Bachelor of Science in Agronomy and Plant Breeding, Master of Science in Agronomy, Agricultural Biotechnology, Plant Breeding, and Ph.D. in Crop Ecology, Crop Physiology and Biometric Genetics, Molecular Genetics and Genetic Engineering. The Department has good research facilities in its laboratories, greenhouses and fields.

Laboratories

Proteomics Laboratory for Resistance to Abiotic Stresses

Field crops are subjected to various environmental stresses including drought, salinity, and extremes of temperature. Tolerance to these abiotic stresses is important to obtain high grain yield as well as quality products. With the discovery of genome sequences in many field crops, it is now apparent to address the comprehensive understanding of complex biological processes ending to provide high quantity and quality yield. This laboratory is equipped to screen the plant material in field and greenhouse with respect to the putative traits contributes in resistance to abiotic stresses and to investigate the proteome response of plant material under different environmental conditions. Modification of the proteins in response to environmental condition such as post-translational modifications are not obvious DNA sequence and can be determined only by proteomic methodologies because localization of gene products, regulation of protein function, recycling and sequestration in cell compartments affect gene products and not gene. The Lab is adapted two-dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis for differential proteome analysis of plant materials and blotting of protein spots on membrane for further structural analysis of proteins.

Genomics & Plant Molecular Breeding Laboratory
Genomics & Plant Molecular Breeding Laboratory was established in 2004, and is one of the first such laboratories in the country. As a result of developments in molecular biology and marker technologies, plant breeding has been in rapid transition as more molecular tools are applied to commonly accepted field techniques. The last few years have seen an explosion of new information and resources in the areas of plant molecular genetics and genomics.
The Genomics & Plant Molecular Breeding Laboratory is interested in:
Analysis of genetic diversity in different plant species using molecular tools such as SSR, ISSR, AFLP and transposon based markers.
QTL mapping for biotic and abiotic stresses such as disease resistance and could, drought and salinity tolerance.
High-throughput, low-cost, allele detection platforms, to help marker assisted ion and breeding.
Analysis of somaclonal variations in medicinal plant using molecular markers.
Isolating, cloning and sequencing of candidate resistance genes and other important genes in wheat and barley.
Training courses for scientists and students in the use of new technologies in molecular breeding and research.

Our goal in the lab (directed by Dr. S.A. Mohammadi) is to collaborate with scientists, other universities and research institutes in the country as well as international centers such as CIMMYT and ICARDA to design projects that can be coupled with innovative tools and computational analyses in order to improve our understanding of genetic architecture of different traits for their efficient utilization in breeding programs. Genetic Engineering Laboratory
The genetic engineering laboratory was established in 2003 to provide research facilities for graduate (M.Sc. and Ph.D.) students and academic staffs. This lab is equipped with different facilities for rDNA-related technologies such as gene/promoter/terminator and other regulatory sequences isolation, identification, cloning, molecular analysis and characterization, construction of specific expression vectors, gene transfer and their expression in different biological systems. Some graduate students of other universities are also working under different projects in the above mentioned fields.
